The budget inside a shell

An arcology, as Soleri named it in 1969, is architecture fused with ecology. The fusion is a budget. People exhale carbon dioxide and water. Crops want light, minerals, and that same carbon. Waste is either a toxin or a feedstock. If the envelope leaks too much, it is just a building. If it leaks too little and the numbers are wrong, it is a tomb.

Miniaturization makes the budget stricter, not looser. Distance can hide a sewage plant and a feedlot. Proximity cannot. That is why closed-habitat research — polar stations, submarines, spacecraft, Biosphere 2 — keeps turning up in this catalog. McMurdo is an isolation analog, not a definition of an arcology. Biosphere 2 as a public failure

Biosphere 2, in Arizona, sealed a crew inside a 3.14-acre glass ecology in 1991. It contained modeled biomes and a farm. Oxygen dropped; the concrete was a sink. The crew split. NASA and later habitat designers treated the failure as data: what not to assume about a sealed budget. 2490 Museum placards can say that without turning the site into a Concordia wing.

The lesson is not “never seal.” It is “count the sinks.” An Earth encyclopedia that skipped this experiment would be selling a drawing.

Rings, light, and the steak problem

Soleri’s drawings and later compact-city sketches often put agriculture on outer terraces or rings: light on the skin, dwellings in the shade of the harvest. That geometry is an Earth idea. Concordia art already likes stacked growing beds; this page does not claim Odelo traced a particular plate.

Cattle inside a sealed envelope are a life-support problem. Herds want land and water and they emit methane. That is ordinary livestock science, not a moral from a game designer. Twenty-first-century writers then reach for cellular agriculture — muscle grown from a biopsy — as a way to keep the taste without the herd. City-scale cultured meat is still a 2020s claim and a future bet, not a 2490 inventory list. This catalog does not ban steak in Concordia. It only records why Earth engineers flinch at a feedlot under glass.

Fish convert feed more tightly. Aquaponics — fish waste feeding plants that clean the water — is a working Earth coupling, already used in greenhouses and classrooms. Insect biomass as a recycler of kitchen scraps is likewise practiced, usually as feed rather than as a forced human menu. Scaling any of that to 100,000 residents is a planning sketch.

Reclaim as chemistry

Blackwater can be digested; methane can be burned; water can be polished with membranes; residual solids can be a soil amendment if the pathogens are actually dead. Those unit operations exist on Earth in plants, not as a romantic “nothing is thrown away.” Concordia already has a civic word, Reclaimer. This page does not publish a piping schedule, and it does not describe emergency overrides.

Why this is also a space problem

A settlement on the Moon or Mars must close loops because the outside is lethal. Earth arcologies are sometimes called test pilots for that problem. Biosphere 2 is the famous attempt; smaller NASA analogs keep running. A city that cannot land — an O’Neill cylinder — is a cousin, not a ferry.
